Blue Ridge Biofuels has worked diligently with many government agencies, non-profits, municipalities, and businesses to make biofuels available in Western North Carolina. Biodiesel is a clean-burning renewable alternative to petroleum diesel fuel, in this case made from used cooking oil collected from local restaurants. Since 2005 they have displaced over 1,000,000 gallons of petroleum based diesel.
The centerpiece of this program is that the oil comes from local sources, is refined locally, and finally are used for as a local energy source. Through Blue Ridge Biofuels, Asheville is advancing public, fleet, and municipal awareness and use of biofuels, while simultaneously supporting the local, green, independent economy in Western North Carolina. Now that jobs are being created in the sustainable biofuels and related industries, new opportunities to install multiple biodiesel funding outlets throughout the region are now more plausible than ever.
